Assistant Estimator

  • The Assistant Estimator is responsible for understanding and evaluating project plans, specifications and other factors that affect project cost. It is critically important that they account for everything needed to successfully procure work in both hard bid and cost-plus scenarios. They must have a thorough knowledge of how to “build”, and apply that knowledge when preparing bid packages, as opposed to just evaluating what is on the plans and specifications.


    • Follows the “Team Approach”, fulfills all responsibilities described therein, and holds other team members accountable for their contribution in a professional and positive manner
    • Assists Estimator as the lead role and coordinator in all aspects of budgeting during pre-construction/buy-out
    • Provide accurate, complete and timely responses to Owner RFP’s
    • Coordinate and lead pre-bid job walks with Estimator, Owner, Project Managers and Subcontractors
    • Provides complete and thorough information to Subcontractors for their use in preparing bids, and works closely with them to achieve the lowest reasonable price for any particular scope of work
    • Pre-Bid Project Evaluation:
    • Review all relevant documents/information with Estimator, Development and Project Manager
    • Identify areas of concern and determine appropriate course of action to get clarification, or account for a particular scope and associated cost impact
    • Review plans for means/methods and constructability issues and submit RFI’s as needed
    • Aggressively pursue value-engineering methods
    • Bid Administration:
    • Responsible for coordinating activities of BOC bid team
    • Solicits feedback from Estimator, PM’s on Subcontractors recent performance and considers this when drafting bidders list
    • Prepares Subcontractor bid packages
    • Maintains log of plan distribution to bidders
    • Solicits and maintains communications with Subcontractors and Vendors
    • Understands capabilities of Subcontractor pool, and requests bids accordingly
    • Transmits addenda or other relevant info to Subcontractors for consideration in their bid
    • Ensures we have adequate Subcontractor coverage
    • Thoroughly re-checks Subcontractor bids for accuracy and completeness prior to subcontract issuance and execution
    • Submittal of bids and budgets by specified deadlines
    • Maintains cost estimating database in real time
    • Utilizes Sage software and Procore in their efforts, and ensures all data is accurate and complete
    • Project Turnover:
    • Facilitate project handoff to construction team (PM/Superintendent) and turn over project docs within 1 week of awarded project, or sooner if schedule demands.
    • Review job cost with Project Manager and discuss any areas of concern
    • Develop new and maintain existing construction community relationships via Architects, Engineers, Subcontractors, Vendors and any other means necessary to aid in procuring work
    • Must excel in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment and be able to execute above summarized duties on multiple concurrent projects

    Bachelor’s degree (B. S.) from four-year College or University in Engineering, Construction Management or other applicable field, and 2 years related experience in the commercial construction industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Estimating and operational experience on commercial construction projects is a plus.
